Care Label Requirements for Apparel: What Every Buyer Must Include
Fan of multilingual care labels with printed wash symbols
What Belongs on a Care Label
The near-universal core: fibre composition by percentage, care instructions (symbols and/or text), country of origin, and the manufacturer or importer identity. Most brands add size, a style or PO reference for traceability, and increasingly a QR code linking to digital care content.
Getting Care Symbols Right
The five-symbol system (wash, bleach, dry, iron, professional care) is standardised under ISO 3758 and its regional equivalents, but the exact symbol sets differ between markets — the US, EU and Japan each have conventions. Specify the destination market to your label supplier so the correct symbol set and language order are used. Wrong symbols are one of the most common reasons export QC flags trims.
Export Market Considerations
The EU requires fibre content in the language of each destination country. The US (FTC rules) requires English care instructions and an RN or company name. Middle East markets often require Arabic. The practical answer: multilingual care labels, planned once, printed as a program. Confirm current requirements with your buyer or compliance team — regulations update, and your buyer's tech pack is the final word.
Placement, Material and Durability
Care labels must remain legible for the life of the garment — that means print systems that survive 50+ washes, sewn into the side seam or back-neck where they can be found easily. Soft satin or laser-cut taffeta prevents the itch that makes customers cut labels out (and lose your care information with them).
